Mason Greenwood Getafe debut marred by chants of ‘die’ from Osasuna supporters

Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood joined Spanish La Liga side Getafe on a season-long loan

The move to Getafe is a chance for Greenwood to rebuild his career after United suspended Greenwood in January 2022 following allegations of attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The transfer of Mason Greenwood to Getafe is controversial, given the allegations against him. However, it is essential to note that the charges against him were dropped, and he has denied all allegations.

On Sunday, as Greenwood made his debut in a cameo appearance against Osasuna, the 21-year-old was greeted with chants calling for him to die.

Greenwood was introduced in the 77th minute and was met with chants of “Greenwood, muérete!” (Greenwood die) from a section of the Osasuna crowd.

After the game, Osasuna coach Jogoba Arrasate slammed the away crowd.“The chants of ‘F*** Osasuna’ were very bad and the chants against Greenwood were very bad too,” he was quoted as saying by the Mirror.

“He is a player who, in the end, the justice system had its say. He is a very good player. But if we talk about chants, we should talk about all the chants, not just some,” he added.

Getafe coach Jose Bordalas, on the other hand, said, “What happened and what people say is something we’re not part of. As I said after the Real Madrid game, we can only talk about sporting issues and we’re happy there. We think this [loan spell] is good for him, good for Getafe and good for football.”

“We’re pleasantly surprised by him. Today was a difficult game that was very back and forth. He helped us in attack and in defence too. He showed solidarity with his team, and he surprised us [physically].
